The Mineworkers’ Pension Scheme (MPS) has announced the appointment of Gary Saunders as a Trustee Director and Chair of the Scheme, effective from 1 May 2024.
Gary will join the Scheme’s Trustee Board which is made up of five independent trustees and five trustees elected by the membership. Gary will take over from current acting Chair, Paula Hay-Plumb.
Commenting on his appointment, Gary said: “I am very proud to be joining the Trustee Board as Chair of the MPS. Having come from a family of East Lancashire mill workers and spending most of my career in manufacturing, I am very aware of how important pensions are to those that have worked incredibly hard, often in difficult conditions, to reach their retirement. MPS has done extremely well in achieving pension enhancements for it's members and it is crucial that we continue to strive for more. I look forward to working with the Trustees and the team at CPT to maximise the benefits for members going forward.
"In addition to also Chairing the pension scheme of DS Smith, I work closely with a start-up business that aims to give advice and support to people seeking a care home for themselves or their loved ones. Like entering retirement, finding the right care for an individual's needs is not easy, especially since it is generally something you do only once. I believe in the UK we need to do more to help people enter retirement in a stress free way, and when the time comes, be able to find the care support they need in a much less confusing and complicated way than we have currently. Retirement should be a period of enjoyment, not stress."
